The Wrath of Khandan – The Shame Strikes Back!: The Family We Choose

As we dive into the next chapter of Dhamaka Arts, I’m thrilled to announce that The Wrath of Khandan – The Shame Strikes Back! is in full development! This show is the second instalment in a trilogy that explores the themes of coming out, family, spirituality, and queerness. Following the success of Besharam [sham-LESS] – Shame The Final FrontierThe Wrath of Khandan shifts focus to the concept of family, exploring the complex relationships between biological family and chosen family.

While themes of queerness, shame, and self-discovery are heavily threaded through the show, The Wrath of Khandan is at its core about what family truly means to me. Drawing on my own autobiographical experiences, I’m excited to delve into the difference between Biological Family and Logical Family—what we often refer to as our Chosen Family. It’s a show that will look at the tension, love, and heartache that can come from both types of family bonds, all framed within a sci-fi narrative. Fans of Star Trek will definitely notice the influence, as the show uses a playful and comedic lens to explore some heavy, emotional themes.

I’m currently in the process of applying for funding through Arts Council England (ACE) to bring back some of the brilliant collaborators who helped bring Besharam [sham-LESS] to life. Reuniting with the team that helped shape the first show will allow us to continue the creative journey and keep building on the momentum we’ve created. With their expertise and the incredible support from Bradford Producing Hub, Kala Sangam, and our amazing partners, we’re poised to take The Wrath of Khandan to new heights.

This show is part of a trilogy that I hold very close to my heart. After The Wrath of Khandan, the final instalment will be Noor (Light) – The Return of Shame. The trilogy will take audiences through my journey of understanding what it means to be queer, to belong, and to reconcile with family. It’s my hope that these shows will resonate deeply with others who have experienced similar struggles and triumphs, and that they’ll continue to build the reputation of Dhamaka Arts as a space for diverse, authentic voices in theatre.

I’m beyond excited to share this next step of the journey with you all. Stay tuned for more updates on The Wrath of Khandan, and thank you to everyone who has supported Dhamaka Arts so far. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries and creating work that celebrates family in all its forms
